If you have an Irish relative that served in WW1 do you know that copies of many of their wills are free to view online at http://soldierswills.nationalarchives.ie/search/sw/home.jsp.
It will be 100 years later this week since Private Patrick Mulrooney was killed in action in Mesopotamia (current day Iraq) on January 21st 1916, age 28. Patrick served with the 1st Battalion Connaught Rangers, service number 9657. At the time of the 1911 Census he was serving in the Punjab but was moved to France at the outbreak of war and later moved to Mesopotamia.
Patrick’s will is particularly interesting as there are 2 handwritten letters from members of his family attesting to his wishes to leave his belongings to his sister Ellen, one from his brother Richard Mulrooney of Bonnetstown and the other from his brother in law Thomas O’Mahoney from Lord Edward St. His will can be seen at http://soldierswills.nationalarchives.ie/…/MulrooneyP_E5058….
